The Different Types of Mold
Category : About Mold
One of the problems with mold is that there are several different types, making it difficult for homeowners to identify exactly which form of mold they are dealing with. Sometimes it seems like you need a degree in biology just to understand the many different types of mold in existence. Here are some of the more common types found inside and outside of one’s home:
One of the most common types of mold, Aspergillus is an allergenic mold, meaning it can cause health problems for those who typically suffer from allergies. Aspergillus is typically found indoors, and can also also be found on food that has expired.
Similar to Aspergillus, Cladosporium is an allergenic mold commonly found in one’s home. Cladosporium often grows in cooler climates, and attaches itself to carpets, bathrooms, and wood structures, such as cabinets. There are more than 30 species of Cladosporium.
Typically blue or green in appearance, Penicillium is usually found in areas of a home that have been damaged by water. Penicillium usually hides under carpets, wallpaper, and insulation. Like other types of mold, it can trigger allergic reactions and cause respiratory attacks if left untreated.
Stachybotrys chartarum, more commonly known as black mold due to its appearance, is one of the most harmful molds. Black mold produces mycotoxins, which can cause several health problems, including respiratory issues, sinus infections, fatigue, and even depression. Like most mold, black mold is commonly found in damp areas, such as basements.
Of course, these are just some of the thousands of known molds. Although some molds may be more harmful than others, if there is mold present in your home or business, it will eventually wreak havoc until it is removed.
